BARCELONA, Spain: Spain will no longer require the wearing of face masks outdoors beginning June 26, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Friday.

"This weekend will be the last one with masks in outdoor spaces because the next weekend we will no longer wear them," Sanchez said in Barcelona.
Wearing masks has been required in Spain since last summer for all Spaniards older than six years old.

However, with the continuing drop in Covid infections and nearly half the Spanish population having received at lease one dose of the Covid vaccine, including more than 90 percent of people over 50 years old - regional authorities have been seeking to end restrictions.

Spain's infection rate fell to 96.6 cases per 100,000 people on Thursday, down from over 150 per 100,000 cases one month ago, and pressure on the health system has also fallen.

Last week, the federal government was forced to withdraw a plan to gradually reopen nightclubs after widespread complaints from regional authorities.
